Fort Augustus Locks
At the southern end of Loch Ness, in the town of Fort Augustus, lies a set of locks for the Caledonian Canal. The canal runs between the east and west sides of Scotland. It is still in use today, as I was leaving I was lucky enough to be stopped at the A82 swing bridge which rotates to allow boats through. After the bridge was put back into position, I parked and watched the boat traverse a few locks. It takes a few minutes for each section to be closed, water level equalized, and the boat to move into the next section. Incidentally, I saw the same boat, the Proud Seahorse, earlier today on my lake cruise. It had just departed Inverness and was headed south across the lake.
