Apollo 50 (2019-07-20)
"Men have landed and walked on the Moon."
-- John Noble Wilford, The New York Times
50 years ago, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first humans to walk on the Moon while Michael Collins orbited above. In honor of this historic day, the Smithsonian commissioned a video projection on the Washington Monument along with matching audio from the Apollo 11 mission. It was quite well done, starting with a small selection of important items from human history, followed by JFK's Moon speech and going through the launch, landing on the Moon, and return to the Earth. The Washington Monument is pretty well suited as a screen to display the Saturn V. They did an excellent job of also showing other major events in the mission and fitting it all onto a tall and narrow structure!
We watched the show twice - once from the middle of the National Mall to get the full visual and audio experience, and a second time from the Capitol Building to get better photos! A historic event in honor of a historic day - I believe this celebration is the only time projection mapping technology has ever been used on the Washington Monument!
