Pecos National Historical Park
Atop a small hill lies the remains of the Pecos Pueblo. It was one populated by 2000 of the Ancestral Pueblo. The Spanish conquistadors built a church nearby in the 1600s which was ultimately destroyed in an uprising. In the 1700s, it was rebuilt atop the ruins of the old church. Remnants of this structure are visible today. Most of the pueblo structures are still covered by mounds of dirt. The small parts that are visible today are what is left of the 2nd floor structures. By the 1800s, Pecos was abandoned. In 2000 years, nature has reclaimed much.
