West Maui Loop
After landing in Maui and eating lunch, we headed northwest out of Kahului along highway 30, a 60 mile loop around west Maui. The initial portion is a narrow, winding county road, much of it without center-line markings or shoulders. A significant portion of it is also single lane, sometimes with just enough space for two cars to pass slowly.
Its pretty slow going but the scenery is quite beautiful. The rugged green scenery reminded me of Scotland, though the actual plants seem pretty different. There are a few places where its safe to stop and take a look around. At one of these places, we saw an unexpected sight - goats walking by! Another highlight was the Nakalele Blowhole, more or less at the northernmost point of Maui. It was pretty active today, spouting every minute or so, sometimes more frequently! We also saw Honolua Bay, a popular snorkeling spot, from up above. The water was quite calm! We ended the drive with sunset at Lahaina, the big town of west Maui.
