Iao Valley is located on the eastern side of Kahalawai, the West Maui volcano. West Maui is similar to the mountains of Kauai - its a lush green place with many valleys that have been eroded through time so that it no longer resembles a volcano in any way. This place is known not only for its scenery but as the location of the final battle where Kamehameha defeated the army of Maui and became the king of all the Hawaiian islands.
