Mendenhall Glacier
A new adventure today - walking on a glacier!
We started out the day in the morning canoeing about 2.5 miles across Mendenhall Lake. Once we went ashore, we took a brief hike up to the glacier. We strapped on our crampons and started walking on the ice. From far away, and even up close, the surface looks like snow but its actually ice. The deep blue parts are the densest parts. The surface tends to be pitted and rough and dirty from the glacier grinding against rocks as it moves downwards into the lake. There's all sorts of crevasses and varied terrain everywhere. Definitely an amazing experience!
